READ_ME
SIGGRAPH 93 Proceedings CD-ROM
This READ_ME file describes the top-level information in the SIGGRAPH 93
Proceedings CD-ROM. This is your first guide to navigating the disc and
is our opportunity to give credit for the work on this disc.
This is primarily an ISO 9660 disc, readable by most CD-ROM players on
most computer systems. We have tried to present a set of information on
the disc that is now usable across the entire spectrum of computers and
that will remain usable in the future. The disc is also readable on the
Macintosh through a separate HFS file directory, but all the data files are
present only once. This is made possible by the dual-directory structure
created by the JVC Information Systems disc mastering system.
We are very interested in your experience with this disc and your
assessment of its value to your work. If you have any strong feelings
about the disc, either positive or negative, please write us:
cunningham@siggraph.org
pathe@siggraph.org
and let us know your experience. Please give us background information
such as the machine you are working on and what you wanted to accomplish
with this disc's information, as well as your comments on the disc
itself. We expect to continue to publish SIGGRAPH conference
proceedings on CD-ROM, so your feedback is critically important to us!
The top-level directory for this disc contains:
READ_ME This file
PAPERS This directory contains the various forms of the papers
as subdirectories on this disc, as noted below:
PDF The papers in the SIGGRAPH 93 Proceedings, translated
into PDF files for the Adobe Acrobat reader that is
distributed on this disc (see the Apps directory and
its READ_ME for more details). Note that you must
install the Acrobat reader and the associated Adobe
Type Manager system before you can read these files.
PS The papers in the SIGGRAPH 93 Proceedings in
PostScript form as provided by the authors.
TXT The papers in the SIGGRAPH 93 Proceedings in ASCII
form as provided by the authors.
FIGURES The figures from papers in the SIGGRAPH 93 Proceedings
and the previous three directories, as provided by the
authors. Most of these are in TIFF format, but some
are in PostScript or EPS formats. These are provided
so the reader may experiment with the exact images
produced by the authors, but are not intended for any
other use; distributing these images or using them in
your own work is an infringement on the rights of the
authors and creators unless you obtain explicit
permission from the authors.
OTHER Several authors have given us additional materials to
expand the information in their papers, and these are
in this directory. We think you'll be pleased with
these extra items!
Cabral: the source code for the system developed by
Brian Cabral and Casey Leedom that is the basis for
their paper at SIGGRAPH 93
Chen: A multimedia version of the paper from Shenchan
Eric Chen and Lance Williams presented at SIGGRAPH 93;
this version, for the Macintosh, includes figures
presented as QuickTime movies. The movies are also
available separately for viewing with the Windows
QuickTime player. You will have to install the Apple
QuickTime software from the Apps directory in order to
take full advantage of these movies. The dual-directory
structure of the disc means that 9660 and Macintosh
readers will see different portions of this material, but
the movies will be visible to each reader.
Schroder: Peter Schroeder and Pat Hanrahan have
provided the Mathematica source for the closed-form
form factor computation between two polygons
Zatz: Harold Zatz’s MS thesis that is the basis for
his paper at SIGGRAPH 93
May93.pdf: The contents of the experimental online
issue of Computer Graphics from May 1993, presented as
PDF files to make this material available to a wider
audience.
SLIDES This directory contains the slides from the SIGGRAPH
93 Technical Slides Set, scanned from the slides to
get consistent slide size. These do not replace the
slide set, but give you another way to look at these
images. There is some duplication between these
images and images in the FIGURES directory, so you can
choose to look at these duplicates in either form.
APPS Application software provided by vendors to help you
get the most from this disc. This includes the Adobe
Acrobat reader for the Macintosh and for Microsoft
Windows, provided by Adobe to allow you to read the
PDF files on the disc, and Apple QuickTime movie
players for the Mactintosh and for Microsoft Windows,
provided by Apple to allow you to play the QuickTime
movies on the disc. We thank Adobe and Apple for
their contributions to this disk. Because of the dual
directory on the disc, 9660 readers will not see the
Macintosh directories and Macintosh readers will not
see the Windows directories.
QTWStuff The QuickTime movie player for Windows is at the
top level because the installer script requires it to
be here instead of at the level we would expect; this
should cause you no problems. This directory will be
visible to both Macintosh and 9660 readers, but the
files for the Windows installation will not be visible.
This disc is the result of a number of contributions by individuals,
universities, and vendors. We would like to thank:
* Adobe Systems for their donation of Acrobat Reader software for
this project and for their donation of pre-release software that
allowed us to create the .pdf files on this disc.
* Apple Computer for their donation of QuickTime software for this
project.
* JVC Information Products for premastering support on this disc.
* Second Look Computing at the University of Iowa (Joan Huntley,
Ric Mommer, and Keith Chiavetta) for valuable assistance with
this disc and for helping us to learn a number of things that help
us present this disc's content as well as possible.
* Judith R. Brown of the University of Iowa for scanning the 1993
SIGGRAPH Technical Slides Set for this CD-ROM.
* California State University Stanislaus for a grant to partially
support Steve Cunningham’s work on this project.
* Steve Spencer of the Advanced Computing Center for Arts and Design
at Ohio State University for his assistance to several authors
with electronic versions of their papers.
* The SIGGRAPH 93 co-chairs, Bob Judd and Mark Resch, and the
SIGGRAPH 93 papers chair, Jim Kajiya, for their support and
cooperation in this project.
